Maple (Yr 4)

Welcome to Maple's Class page!

In our class you will find Mrs Reed and Mrs McCoach our class teachers and Mrs Perry and Mrs Van Vuuren our classroom assistants. We hope you enjoy finding out more about our fantastic learning in Year 4.

Dear Parents / Carers,

Our topic this half term is ‘Rainforests.’ Here are a few details about what we will be learning about in various subject areas:

During the first part of this half term we will be focusing on “The Great Kapok Tree” written by Lynne Cherry.

We are going to be exploring the features of persuasive writing and using these to create an exposition on the effects of deforestation.

We are also going to be looking at balanced arguments and how to structure a debate.

In Year 4 SPaG lessons, we will be continuing to practise use of fronted adverbials, we will be exploring past tense verbs, using conjunctions to express time and cause and introducing possessive pronouns.

Here are some of the key areas that we will be covering over the next few weeks:

Year 4

Measurement: Area

Fractions: Including tenths, equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, fractions of a quantity.

Decimals: Tenths and hundredths, dividing one and two-digit numbers by ten.

We will also continue our daily arithmetic and times table practise.

History / Geography

This term the children will be learning about Rainforests

During this unit, children will:

·       Discover where the rainforests are in the world and locate them on a world map.

·       Explore what it is like in a rainforest and learn about the four main layers of vegetation.

·       Define the word ‘climate’ and use charts and graphs to explore the climate of tropical rainforests.

·       Understand what a biome is and where the different types are located.

·       Discover the indigenous rainforest tribes and compare their lives with life in modern society.

·       Explore how the rainforests are under threat and the actions that we can take to help save them.

This term the children will be learning about animals living in South America. In particular they will discover:

·       The types of animals found in South America.

·       The classification of these animals (amphibian, mammal, insect, etc.)

·       The food chains for certain animals.

·       The life cycles for different classifications of animals.

·       How animals are specially adapted for the rainforest environment.

To help your children with their learning, you can do the following:

·       Make sure they read daily. Try to engage with them about the book they are reading by asking them a few questions about what is happening, what they think might happen next and which character is their favourite and why. Read with them or to them when you can, this is still very beneficial even for older children.

·       Make sure they practise their times tables as much as possible. Children in Maple Class will have a mini multiplication test every Monday to help them prepare for the Year 4 multiplication check in June. Each week, we will post on Class Dojo the multiplication table to be tested the following week. Times Tables Rockstars is great for practising tables. Alternatively, try Multiplication Tables Check - Mathsframe or Hit the Button - Quick fire maths practise for 6-11 year olds (

·       Make sure children practise their spellings in preparation for a weekly test on Fridays. Spellings will be posted on Class Dojo weekly.

Thank you for your continued support.
